Usain St. Leo Bolt, OJ, CD (born 21 August 1986) is a Jamaican sprinter and Olympic and World Champion, born in Trelawny, Jamaica.

He announced that he would retire after the 2017 World Championship in London. In his final individual race, Bolt was upset by Justin Gatlin who won his second title at this distance, despite previous doping bans.

Career[]

Regarded as the fastest man ever, Bolt has a record eleven World Championship gold medals, more than any other athlete in world championship history, along with two silvers. This makes him the athlete with the second most medals in history, falling just one short behind Jamaican-Slovenian athlete Merlene Ottey. He is still the most successful male athlete at world level.

In 2016 at the Summer Olympics in Rio, Bolt achieved a "triple triple" meaning he won all three sprint titles (100m, 200m and 4x100m relay) at each of the last three Olympics. However that was nullified in January of 2017 when Bolt lost his relay gold from the 2008 Olympics following a positive drugs test for Nesta Carter, leading to the entire Jamaican team losing their medals.

IAAF World Championships[]

Bolt won his first title at Berlin 2009 in the men's 100 metres. He has dominated the 200 metres since his breakthrough in 2009, but hopes of adding an extra 100 metre title were dashed after he false started in the final the 2011 World Championships. With Bolt disqualified for this error, Bolt's countryman Yohan Blake took the title. This remains Bolt's only failure to win a medal and he won the next two World Championship 200 metres titles.

In August 2017, he competed in the 2017 World Championships in London, his final competition before retiring. In his final-ever 100 metre race, Bolt was defeated by American drug cheat Justin Gatlin and his team-mate Christian Coleman and settled for bronze. Gatlin was then booed by the crowd. It was only Bolt's second failure to win gold in the 100 metres (after the false start calamity in Daegu 2011).
